Examining The Mining Industry’s Public Relations Strategy and Thoughts on Public Perception
Metals demand today is at its highest in history, and our rapid advancement and government policy only seem to push demand higher.
For an industry that impacts us daily, it is surprising how scarcely we see positive or educational news about mining in general media excluding mining-specific publications. In a time when permitting processes are long and funding is tight for most projects, could this have an impact?
We sought to gather input from our network on how the industry perceives the current public outreach and whether enough is being done.

Mining the digital revolution
The digital revolution is well on its way, and it’s changing the global economy fast and furiously.
Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, data analytics, drones, 3D visualisation tools, forecasting solutions, and other innovations, including communication technology, are
playing the same enabling role steam engines played a few centuries ago. Like machines running on steam, digital innovations are helping our economy grow and making
companies efficient, safer, run faster, and more profitable with fewer mistakes and at a lower cost.
But can the same be said for the mining industry? There is no doubt that technology is rapidly transforming the sector but are all organisations up to speed? While some mining
companies are harnessing the power of technology to boost efficiency, productivity, turnover, and safety, most are slow to adapt.
We wanted to find out more, which is why we surveyed mining professionals from around the world on how they believe technology and the digital revolution are
changing their industry. The numbers don’t lie. There is much work to be done.

Fit To Lead
Thank you for your interest in our latest research report.
In this first report for 2019, we consider the challenge faced in finding the ideal fit between senior mining leaders and organisational culture.
In his near three-month research project, we collected data through nearly 150 scientific behavioural assessments, and almost 200 surveys, of COOs/Operational VP's and General Managers, across nearly 140 organisations globally. In writing our report and recommendations, we also applied data and the insights from our years in managing mining executive search and recruitment assignments globally.
The report highlights the behavioural profiles that are currently most commonly found in leaders and considers their fitness for the future. Our findings have implications for recruitment, personal development and coaching, succession planning and talent management.
The report concludes with a 'Lessons for Leaders' summary.

Assessments Assessed
In our latest study we asked 274 clients about the use of psychometric and behavioural assessments in the recruitment process and beyond.
While it is fair to say assessments have their detractors, the majority believe such instruments can play an important role in bringing the right talent onboard – when they are done well.
This short report, which we believe is a first, gives an overview of the use of assessments in the global mining industry and people’s attitudes towards them. The insights helped us to develop our TalentAssay™ methodology and platform.

The Great Escape
The Lost Leaders
In the first quarter of 2015, we ran a survey asking about senior level staff turnover in the mining industry. More than 450 mining professionals answered three brief questions about their personal experiences:
- Thinking about your current or most recent employer, how many people in the top five site-based management positions have left the organisation in the last 12 months?
- Thinking about your current or most recent employer, how many people in the top five corporate or executive management positions have left the organisation in the last 12 months?
- Thinking about your own career intentions, at what point will you consider taking a role with another organisation?
